Quest Academy

Quest Academy is a small private school in suburban Palatine that provides an environment for gifted children whose educational needs are not being well served by the local public schools.  They were well established and had a lot to offer students but lacked outdoor educational opportunities.  The school decided to acquire a nearby property that had been in poor condition with a known history of security concerns, trash accumulation, and flooding.  Watermark worked with the design team to re-zone the property and incorporate it into the school.  We designed the site with natural features and stormwater management improvements which greatly reduced the flooding in the neighborhood.  This property, which was once eyesore, was transformed into an amenity to the community.

  • Added sports field and outdoor education space to suburban private school
  • Redeveloped flood prone area and reduced regional flooding in neighborhood
  • Green infrastructure improvements

In 2005, Watermark was retained to design an office park on a 17.5 acre single use office building site.  The development was quickly approved and the first few office buildings were constructed.  When the Great Recession hit in 2008, this office park stopped growing and much of the site sat vacant for many years.  In 2014, Watermark was retained to help re-purpose 6 acres of the original development into a vibrant indoor sports complex in order to rejuvenate the park and bring new life to the once neglected area.  The construction is now complete and Naperville Yard is a thriving part of the community.

  • 110,000 square foot indoor sports complex on a 6 acre parcel in Naperville IL
  • Creative transformation of faltering office park to include sports complex
  • Performed landscape as-built and designed plantings to meet stringent code requirements

Compass School

Our client’s vision was to transform an existing office space into an upscale child care facility. This type of transformation requires attention to detail and a focus on safety. The project included a new walking path, pedestrian bridge, playground, fencing, landscaping, and ADA upgrades throughout. The approvals for such a unique project were intensive and required thoroughness and constant communication with the team. This project is a great example of effectively serving our clients by providing them with both civil engineering and landscape architecture under one roof. We pride ourselves on our ability to assemble the right team for any project and deliver the specific results our clients need to win.

  • Transformation of existing, unrelated use, into a high-end child care facility
  • Outdoor patio, pedestrian bridge, and playground design
  • Performed a landscape as-built of entire site in order to meet Village requirements

Baha’i Temple

The Baha’i House of Worship is a historical landmark that is visited by a quarter of a million people each year.  Watermark was retained in 1999 to help digitize and re-construct records from the original construction of the temple which began in 1912.  In 2006, we were asked to work on the garden reconstruction and visitor’s center design.  This project posed many unique design challenges including: the confined location of the building and construction site; the desire to keep the house of worship accessible to the public during construction; and the proximity to the North Shore Channel and existing MWRD combined sewer system.  Watermark is very proud to be a member of the design team for this project that will continue to be used by thousands of people each year.

  • Historic Landmark
  • Green Infrastructure including cistern for irrigating the gardens
  • Complete reconstruction of the grounds while keeping open to the public
